We found this place located on the Passeig de Gracia and had a very pleasant evening.Txapela is a basque tapas bar. Pintxo is the basque word for small tapas often served on a stick and on a slice of bread.When sitting at the bar, you receive a place-mat with pictures and description of all the tapas served.'Txirimiri' (#7) melted brie cheese; 'Bidasoa' (#25) smoked salmon & hard boiled egg; and 'Patatas Bravas' were very good and some of my favorites.

Frida Kahlo y sus Mundos

Last Sunday we visited the Museo de Arte de Ponce to see the exhibition "Frida Kahlo y sus Mundos".

"The Museo de Arte de Ponce (MAP) exhibits Frida Kahlo and her Worlds. This exhibition presents a unique approach to the art of one of the most significant artists of the XX century. With more than 250 objects paintings, sculptures, engravings, customs and ceramic, among others the exhibition examines Kahlos work in the light of the influences of popular art, XIX and early XX paintings, photography and pre-hispanic art. Furthermore, Frida Kahlo and her Worlds places the artist in the background of the artistic renaissance of post-revolutionary Mexico, establishing the relationship with her contemporaries and students.
The exhibition includes almost 50 of Fridas works: 21 paintings on canvas, metal, and paper, 16 drawings, 10 sketches and two engravings and watercolors which she worked on from 1925 to 1951.
The exhibition is divided in five sections. Each one researches the influences in Kahlos art and the evolution of her unique style: POSITIVISM, A POPULAR TEACHING;THE PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDY AND THE PORTRAIT; THE MOTHER: THE CATHOLIC FAITH; DIEGO RIVERA, FRIDA KAHLO AND POPULAR ART; ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL EDUCATION. The last two sections of the exhibition are made up of first-class photographs of Kahlo in her famous Casa Azul, which became a museum after her death. These sections deal with another aspect of the artists legacy: the work of her students, The Fridos. This brings to a close Frida Kahlo and her Worlds, which not only show the fascination and power of this important artist of the XX century, but also her enduring influence."

Statue of Liberty - Journal page I made in Dawn's Journal. I wanted to use the backgrounds of each page I worked on .This was an encyclopedia page and it started with the Liberty Statue's history and the black & white image. I paste the color image and stamped the words .(In 1979 a group of Puerto Ricans placed our flag in the statue's forehead claiming Puerto Rico's Liberty and our political prisoner's freedom.)

A very sad weekend FBI Assassinates Puerto Rican Nationalist Leader Filiberto Ojeda Rios

When word came late Friday afternoon that FBI agents had surrounded the house in Puerto Rico where Filiberto Ojeda Rios was hiding out, most people expected the worst. On Saturday, the FBI confirmed that Ojeda had been killed in a shootout with agents.

The death of Filiberto Ojeda Rios highlights once again Puerto Rico`s delicate and vague political relationship to the U.S., and an independence movement that is dwindling but undying. Even those people who don`t believe the island should be an independent nation respect the leaders and the history of the independence movement, and are disturbed by the events surrounding Ojeda`s death.

The FBI moved in on Ojeda on a day of great significance in Puerto Rico, the 147th anniversary of El Grito de Lares, a cry for independence. And given that Ojeda was in his 70s, surely there was a way to capture him without killing him. Then, FBI officials waited almost a day before confirming his death. Protesters on the island said the FBI mishandled the arrest.

For 12 or 15 solid hours, he was left there to bleed. The blood from his body seeped out of the house under the door and through the little place in front of the house and could be seen by everybody,but the Federal Bureau of Investigations repeatedly denied the access of his doctors or his attorneys that were there as he bled to death.

Ojeda’s life and death are an important part of the story of Puerto Rico, the people’s struggle to preserve their dignity and history, and a U.S. government that says it is fighting for democracy still maintains a colonial relationship with this island of 3.8 million U.S. citizens.

I'm back from Wasghington DC, I went to my sister's wedding it was a stressful family trip (I'm not used to travel with my parents).Sorry I don't have pics but I left my digital camera at home.I'm sending the Nikon's photo film to Clark Labs tomorrow, it means i will have my photos back in a week, sorry for that, I promise I'll post them.
After all the shopping (Potomac Mills,Tysons Corner Center,Target,TJ Maxx,Michael's, Recollections and The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City) we visited the National Gallery of Art we had a short time but it was enough to see Van Gogh's Self Portrait,Monet's
Water Lilies,Degas Ballet Dancers , Mary Cassat's Girls at the beach etc.
At the Museum Shop I bought this beautiful Sketchbook Andy Warhol Idea Book that I'm in love with.
We visited also the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art they have an exhibition of big block wooden stamps that is awesome.
We stayed at Cristal City's Hilton were we had to evacuate the building at 3:00 am because a drunk guy pulled out a box from the fire alarm system.Besides that the hotel was good and we paid only 89.00 per night plus the taxes.
Our last day there I bought myself a birthday present (my 35th bday is in october)a new SLR digital cam which I'm trying to learn how to use, a Nikon D70s, so I have a big manual to read and also I'm getting ready to start a Collaborative Journal Project which means there's gonna be "material" to post.
(Sorry for the gram errors but english is not my first language)

"MUSES"
"Muses is an entourage of nine bronze semi-goddesses, inspired on Greek mythology and translated into the Caribbean context by the creativity and wit of artist Annex Burgos . Each one represents one of the Fine Arts, embodying the disciplines of singing, dance, literature, architecture, design, plastic arts, cinema, music, and the theater.

The muses are installed at the entrance-level square
of the Fine Arts Center in Santurce, as if they were walking toward the complex. The figures cast in bronze are based on real life artists-models, most of them practitioners of the arts represented. The castings follow the natural silhouettes of the models, although they are slightly larger than life-size, supported by the skirts which are the foundation of each piece.

This procession of figures creates an immediate visual interaction with the public, paying a tribute to art and providing an opportunity to reflect about artistic activity in Puerto Rico and throughout the Caribbean."
